Following Billy the Kid's trail we descended to White Sands, a place like no other on Earth. From above it looks like a glowing piece of land in the middle of the desert.
Rising from the heart of the Tularosa Basini it is one of the world's great natural wonders - the glistening white sands of New Mexico. Here, great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles of desert and created the world's largest gypsum dune field.
White Sands is also the biggest missile range in the United States. Big posted signs warn the drivers of "possible explosions and give friendly advice, please close your windows and wait 1 hour."
